The Icehouse Is Under New Management (Again)

the hooks. do not count them. i did not count them.
The Village's own web site keeps a business directory, and if you have never read it, go read it, because it is seven lines long and every line is a confession. The Icehouse, at the landing: ice, fuel, coffee. Under new management.
It has said under new management since I started reading it. It said it in 2019, when I first saved the page, and it says it tonight. Either the management keeps changing, or the sentence is doing a different job than it looks like.
A member of the Board whose cousin works nights there (you know the thread) says the new fellow lasted eleven days. He was punctual. He was, by every account, incurious. The classified said do not count the coats on the hooks and he did not count them. What he did, cousin says, was notice that the number of coats on the hooks in the morning did not match the number of people who came in out of the dark the night before, and noticing is counting with your eyes closed.
He is fine, and he is elsewhere. He does not want to talk about it and I did not ask him to.
The ad is back in the Chronicle this week, or it will be when the paper's website catches up. Same wording. Cash and boudin.
I relay. You decide.
In Truth and Terror.
